Scribe are delighted to announce that we have recently acquired three new titles: The Theatre of War by Bryan Doerries, Shakespeare Not Stirred by Caroline Bicks and Michelle Ephraim, and Brilka's Book by Nino Haratischvili.
The Theatre of War has been called 'capacious yet intimate' by Andrew Soloman, author of Far From The Tree. Bryan Doerries is the creator of the Theater of War troupe, which stages dramatized readings of ancient Greek plays for those returning from the battlefield, or from other traumas, in need of re-enactment and catharsis. Doerries reminds us that Sophocles was a general, and had a martial intent, and shows us that his plays or those of Aeschylus remain harrowing and liberating for military or non-military audiences alike. The book is an enthralling guide to how classical tragedy can be life-changing, and a roar against forgetting.
Scribe acquired UK & Commonwealth rights direct from the Zoe Pagnamenta Agency, which controls translation rights. Knopf will publish in the US and Canada in September, and Scribe in the UK, Ireland and ANZ in October this year.
In Shakespeare, Not Stirred Caroline Bicks and Michelle Ephraim usher their adored Bardista into your living room and have him whip up some tasty, original cocktails and snacks for any occasion (or calamity) in your life. From ‘Get Thee to a Winery: Girls’ Night Out’ to ‘Exit, Pursued by a Beer: Drowning Your Sorrows,’ this situation-sensitive, merrily designed book brings a Shakespearean swirl to life’s everyday highs and lows. Readers who downed Tequila Mockingbird and felt the force of William Shakespeare’s Star Wars will thrill to its intoxicating mix of literary nerdery, and cheeky wordplay.
Bicks and Ephraim are eminent English professors and eminent merry punsters, and founders of the Everyday Shakespeare project. Scribe has UK & Commonwealth rights in the title and will publish this autumn in hardback, as will Penguin’s Perigee imprint in North America. All other rights are with Wolf Literary, from whom Scribe acquired rights. Wolf Literary are also the agents for the William Shakespeare’s Star Wars series by Ian Doescher.
Brilka's Book by Nino Haratischvili may well be The Great Georgian Novel. Written in German and published in Germany, where Nino has lived for over two decades since her parents emigrated from her native Georgia, under the title Das Achte Leben, it has received rave reviews, and attracted a host of ardent fans for its century-spanning, multi-generational epic tale of the lives of the women of one spirited Georgian family across six generations.
Scribe acquired World English Language rights in the book from Joachim Unseld at Frankfurter Verlagsanstalt via Anna Webber at United Agents, and has commissioned Charlotte Collins and Ruth Martin to deliver a full English translation for publication in 2017. Translation rights have already been sold in Dutch and Turkish. All other rights are with Frankfurter Verlag.
