Scribe accepts unsolicited and unagented manuscripts for review (with certain criteria – see below). However, to help us cope with the volume of submissions we receive, we now only accept unsolicited submissions during seasonal three-month windows:
1 January through to 31 March
1 July through to 30 September
Any submissions received outside these periods will unfortunately not be read, and will not be responded to.
Criteria for eligible submissions
We are a trade-publishing house (that is, we publish books for general readers that are made available nationally and internationally through the book trade). Accordingly, we only consider proposals for books of this nature. We are generally interested in literary fiction and serious non-fiction.
If you are a non-fiction writer not represented by a literary agent, we are only able to consider unsolicited submissions if you have a demonstrated background of writing for general readers (for example, by having had books published by trade publishers, or by having had articles — not letters — published in newspapers or in journalistic outlets such as Good Weekend or The Monthly).
If you are a fiction writer not represented by a literary agent, we are only able to consider unsolicited submissions if you have a demonstrated background of publishing for general readers (for example, by having had books published by trade publishers, or by having short stories published in literary journals or magazines), or if you have received awards or commendations for your writing, or if you have a recommendation from a published author.
Please note that, at present, we do not accept unsolicited poetry, plays, young adult fiction, individual short stories, or children’s picture books for Scribble (see the Scribble site for their submission window). We encourage all who submit to familiarise themselves with our list. If you can see your work sitting alongside other Scribe titles, and you and your work qualify for submission, we look forward to reading your submission.
How to submit
If you meet the eligibility criteria, please do not call, but email your proposal to email@example.com within one of our submission periods noted above. Please include the title of the work in the email subject line and whether it is a fiction or non-fiction submission, and attach the following as a PDF or Word attachment in one email:
a synopsis of your work (up to three paragraphs);
an estimate of your manuscript word length and probable completion date if it is still in progress;
your manuscript (or sample chapters, if you prefer); and
a writer’s CV and/or a summary of your previous publications/awards/recognition for your work.
You’ll need to be frank with us about the submission history of your manuscript, and to tell us if your manuscript is under simultaneous consideration by other publishers. Hard copy submissions will not be considered.
When you send us your submission, you will receive an automatic reply acknowledging receipt of your email. We will respond to your submission once we’ve considered it — usually within three months. Due to the large number of manuscripts we receive, unfortunately we are unable to provide individual editorial advice.
