Celebrating Pride 2022

Happy Pride Month! What better way to celebrate than to buy some excellent books from one of the UK's wonderful queer bookshops. Here is a selection of queer and independent bookshops from across the UK to visit this month (and every month), that stock and celebrate LGBTQ+ writers.

And if you can’t make it down in person, head over to to order from any one of these brilliant bookshops:

The Bookish Type started out as pop-up bookstalls at events at various venues, before the owners set up a website and finally a brick and mortar bookshop in September 2020 in Leeds.

Queer Lit is Manchester's award-winning independent LGBTQ+ bookshop. They stock over 2,700 titles and are based in the city’s Northern Quarter.

The Portal Bookshop is based in York. They specialise in science fiction, fantasy, and sell all of the LGBTQ+ books they can source from the UK, the US, and beyond.

Gay’s The Word opened in January 1979 in London, making it the oldest and one of the most well-established LGBTQ+ bookshops in the UK.

The Common Press is a new intersectional bookshop café based in the heart of Shoreditch, London. They champion titles that represent queer and marginalised communities and work with a variety of independent creatives.

Lighthouse Bookshop is a queer-owned and women-led independent community bookshop based in Edinburgh, and was nominated as Scotland’s Best Independent Bookshop in 2020.

Paned o Gê is an independent queer bookshop, cafe, bar, and event space based in Cardiff.

Shelf Life Books and Zines is a not-for-profit radical bookshop in Cardiff working with independent publishers and DIY zine-makers to make space for marginalised and under-represented voices.

Category Is Books is based in Glasgow and stocks new and second hand queer books, magazines, graphic novels, comics, and zines. The owners also run a home delivery service if you can’t make it to the shop in person.

Do you run an LGBTQ+ bookshop and did we miss you? Let us know and we’ll add your shop to our list.
