Berlin Syndrome is a tense literary thriller set in the once-divided city. When backpacker Clare meets charismatic local Andi near the site of the Berlin Wall the attraction is instant and they spend the night together. But when Clare wakes up in Andi’s apartment, she discovers that the door is locked. And it soon becomes clear that he has no intention of letting her go ...

The book has been adapted into a film directed by Cate Shortland, the award-winning director of Lore and Somersault, and will be released by Curzon Artificial Eye in the UK on May 12. You can watch the trailer here. Berlin Syndrome is Melanie Joosten’s debut novel and it saw her named a Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Novelist and receive the Kathleen Mitchell Award.
