Ross McMullin at The Australia & New Zealand Festival of Literature & Arts

Ross McMullin, author of Farewell, dear people: biographies of Australia’s lost generation and Pompey Elliott, will take part in the Australia & New Zealand Festival of Literature & Arts with Paul Ham and Lord David Owen with a panel examining the build up to WWI, and the Great War's impact on Australian and New Zealand national identity.

As the 100-year anniversary of WW1 draws near, the experts will not only explore the role of Australia and New Zealand in the Great War and the events that led to their involvement, but they will also look at the stories that emerged against a backdrop of two national identities that would be changed forever. Conscription was mandated in New Zealand from 1916, but not in Australia, yet large numbers of men from both countries enlisted in an effort to ‘do their bit for country and Empire’. What drove so many to enlist voluntarily, and how did their sacrifice and unheralded contribution influence the outcome of the Great War?
