After nearly forty years of independent publishing in Australia and two in the UK, Scribe is proudly launching Scribble — its first children’s imprint, and its first new imprint since its foundation — this International Literacy Day.
Picture books are the first step towards literacy. A beautifully designed, engaging picture book can stay with a young reader forever, and be part of the foundation upon which a life-long love of reading is laid.
Commissioning editor Miriam Rosenbloom says, ‘It’s something that I had always wanted to do, but since I became a mother myself last year I’ve seen how picture books are one of the best ways to start conversations with children — conversations about ourselves, our families, our communities, and our world. They can capture the magic of a young life unfolding, and communicate experiences and emotions that are not easy to explain.’
‘Scribble will be a vibrant, eclectic list of illustrated books for children with a focus on high design and editorial standards. We’re looking to publish around six titles a year — a combination of rediscovered classics, the best of international authors and illustrators, and our own specially commissioned list.’
After deciding to launch the list, the search was on for the perfect name, with the suggestion of Scribble put forward by Millie, the eleven-year old daughter of Scribe’s UK editor, Philip Gwyn Jones. ‘It’s the perfect name for the imprint’ says Rosenbloom.
