Scribe acquires new book by Middle East correspondent-turned-humanitarian Sherine Tadros

Scribe has acquired a new book by Sherine Tadros, a former Middle East correspondent and news anchor for Al Jazeera English and Sky News and current Deputy Director of Advocacy and Representative to the United Nations for Amnesty International. Taking Sides: a memoir about love, war, and changing the world will be published in March 2023 and has been called ‘not just a memoir but a call to action’ by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Leymah Gbowee.

A moving and gripping memoir, Taking Sides focuses on Tadros's career reporting on such extraordinary, world changing-events as the 2008 and 2014 Gaza Wars, the Arab Spring and the rise of the Islamic State group — then, after her fiancé left her on their wedding day, she left reporting behind in order to pursue her true purpose: fighting for human rights.

Raised in London as the child of Egyptian immigrant parents, Sherine has always been attuned to injustice. Now, with her work at Amnesty International, she lobbies governments to ensure that human rights are protected around the world. In Taking Sides, she recounts her story with the verve of a clear-sighted campaigner and a natural storyteller, sharing her remarkable journey from witnessing injustice to fighting it head on at the United Nations as a representative of the world's largest human rights organisation.

UK and Commonwealth rights, including audio, were acquired from Abner Stein in association with Massie & McQuilkin. Commissioning editor Simon Wright said: ‘Taking Sides is a fearless memoir, written with compassion and honesty. As a journalist, Sherine faced unimaginable danger. But she shows that in today's climate her present work, defending human rights in the corridors of power, requires courage and determination of a different kind. It’s a privilege to be publishing Sherine's inspirational book at Scribe.’

As a broadcast journalist for Sky News and Al Jazeera, Sherine Tadros was trained to tell only the facts, as dispassionately as possible. But how can you remain neutral when reporting from war zones, or witnessing brutal state repression?

For twenty-six years, Tadros grew up in the quiet surroundings of her family’s London home, and yet injustice was something her Egyptian immigrant parents could never shelter her from. From her first…
