Africa Writes Day: Race and Roots
Marchelle Farrell left behind the pristine beaches and emerald hills of Trinidad for the peaceful English countryside. Uprooting is the story of how, as the only Black woman in her village, Marchelle put down new roots amidst the collision of a worldwide pandemic and a global racial reckoning, unearthing the colonialism that has led her to this place.
Varaidzo is a writer and artist. Her short story ‘Bus Stop’ was shortlisted for the 4thWrite Prize 2018. She is a contributor to the bestselling anthology The Good Immigrant (Unbound, 2016) and the romance anthology Who’s Loving You (Trapeze, 2021). She was previously the Digital Editor at Wasafiri, and the Arts & Culture Editor at gal-dem.
