The Christmas decorations have finally been packed away, and we can now turn our thoughts to the year ahead. We've got some wonderful books coming up for you in 2016. Here are a few which have already been picked out as 'Ones to Watch':
Rachel Cooke told readers of The Observer: 'I heartily recommend You Could Do Something Amazing With Your Life [You Are Raoul Moat] by Andrew Hankinson, which tells the story of the last days of the Geordie bodybuilder who, after killing his ex-girlfriend’s lover and blinding a policeman, went on the run in the Northumberland countryside in 2010. What sets this book apart is the fact that Hankinson’s narrative, written in the second person, is formed entirely of Moat’s own words. The result is a desperately sad book about masculinity, deprivation and loss.' Both Tom Gatti (New Statesman) and Edel Coffey (Irish Independent) also included it in their 2016 roundups, with Coffey adding: 'A remarkable book ... Nothing less than compelling.' You Could Do Something Amazing With Your Life [You Are Raoul Moat] will be published in February.
Also in New Statesman, Marina Benjamin's meditation on ageing, The Middlepause: on turning fifty, was praised for its 'emotional honesty'. It offers a meaningful look at middle age that challenges our culture’s obsession with youth, and will be published in June.
Finally, Arminta Wallace of the Irish Times recommended Digital vs Human by Richard Watson, which has already attached praise from Baroness Susan Greenfield CBE and author Theodore Zeldin. We will publish in April.
Happy New Year from all at Scribe! We hope you enjoy our 2016 books ...
