In honour of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, we will be donating 1000 copies of the new title Questions I Am Asked About The Holocaust to UK schools and libraries. In this brief, eloquent book, suitable for adults or younger readers alike, a campaigning ninety-four year-old survivor answers the questions about the Holocaust you never dared to ask - and explains why today’s politicians need to heed the lessons of the past more than ever.
Hédi Fried was nineteen when the Nazis snatched her family from their home in Eastern Europe and transported them to Auschwitz, where her parents were murdered and she and her sister were forced into hard labour until the end of the war. Now in her nineties and still politically active, she has spent her life educating young people about the Holocaust and answering their questions about one of the darkest periods in human history.
In this book Fried pulls together the questions she was most often asked by young people when she gave her talks over the past thirty years, e.g. ‘How was it to live in the camps?’, ‘Did you dream at night?’, ‘Why did Hitler hate the Jews?’, ‘Can you forgive?’ and 'Do you see yourself in today's refugees'. She also comments on the recent resurgence of the far-right in Europe and elsewhere.
Scribe's owner and founder Henry Rosenbloom, the son of two Holocaust survivors himself, says ‘This is a book that should be read by everyone, and we strongly feel that no young reader should be deprived of the opportunity to read Hédi's powerful and honest account of a historical period that remains incomprehensible to so many. The devastating recent cuts to UK libraries have convinced us that donating a substantial quantity of books will help ensure that young people can access this important book.’
To request coies for your school or library, please email sarah [at] scribepub.co.uk before the close of business on February 22 specifying your postal address, the quantity requested and whether you would like teaching notes. You will receive an email confirmation when books are dispatched.
