Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is the charity that promotes and supports Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) in the UK, which takes place each year on 27 January. HMD 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz- Birkenau, and the 25th anniversary of the Genocide in Bosnia.
Scribe are proud to announce that, for this landmark year, we have partnered with the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust to distribute free copies of Questions I Am Asked About the Holocaust by Hédi Fried to a selection of Holocaust Memorial Day activity organisers. Praised by The Observer and The Sunday Times, the book is a collection of the questions that survivor and activist Fried has been asked by young people about her experiences during WWII.
Fried was nineteen when the Nazis snatched her family from their home in Eastern Europe and transported them to Auschwitz, where her parents were murdered and she and her sister were forced into hard labour until the end of the war. Now ninety-five, she has spent her life educating young people about the Holocaust and answering their questions about one of the darkest periods in history. Her book answers questions like, ‘How was it to live in the camps?’, ‘Did you dream at night?’, ‘Why did Hitler hate the Jews?’, and ‘Can you forgive?’.
Holocaust Memorial Day Trust have a number of free resources on their website that can be used alongside the book, including poster packs and booklets that you can order, and films, images, teaching materials, life stories and activities that you can download. Visit www.hmd.org.uk/resources to browse the collection.
Olivia Marks-Woldman, Chief Executive of Holocaust Memorial Day Trust says “We are so pleased to work with Scribe UK to make this remarkable book available to schools and libraries across the country. Resources like Questions I Am Asked About The Holocaust help to ensure that survivors’ voices and experiences will remain at the heart of Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK for years to come, and enable people in schools, libraries, communities and faith settings to learn from Hédi Fried.”
