Scribe are thrilled to announce that we have set up a reforestation grove with Trees for Life, a conservation charity dedicated to rewilding the Scottish Highlands. The ‘Greenwood Grove’, is situated in Dundreggan, the charity’s flagship rewilding site in Glenmoriston, Scotland.
The grove is named after Greenwood by Michael Christie, a timely and deeply moving novel about the destruction of the natural world and the need to protect our trees, publishing in February 2020. Scribe has donated an initial 30 trees to the grove and are encouraging members of the publishing community and the general public to donate a tree too. At £6 per tree, you can donate a tree at any time simply by following this link, https://treesforlife.org.uk/groves/greenwood-grove/, and clicking ‘Add to this grove’. We are also encouraging booksellers to fundraise in-store for Trees for Life by offering bookmarks that provide information on how to donate, with every Greenwood window display pack.
Author Michael Christie, a former carpenter and homeless shelter worker who campaigns for urgent climate action, has said of the grove, ‘It's not just a marketing strategy, it's also a very significant message to send to readers and the whole publishing industry as well.’
Molly Slight, the book’s acquiring editor in the UK, added: ‘It is entirely fitting that, instead of mass producing paper marketing materials for this book, our marketing team has instead decided to make a donation to Trees of Life, setting up the Greenwood Grove in its honour. The future that Michael Christie depicts in Greenwood of a world without trees is unthinkable — without reforestation initiatives, it may well become our reality. Members of Scribe’s staff in the UK and Australia have already donated several saplings, and I urge the rest of the trade to donate a tree if they are in a position to do so.’
