We've had a fantastic year here at Scribe, and it seems that critics across the UK and Ireland agree: our books are popping up on ‘Best of 2017’ lists all over the place!
We were particularly thrilled to see Michael Brooks's The Quantum Astrologer's Handbook appear at number six in The Daily Telegraph's Books of the Year, with Steven Poole calling it ‘A beautifully novelistic fusion of physics and biography.’ We also loved seeing 1947, Elisabeth Åsbrink's panoramic account of the year when now began, in Metro's non-fiction Books of the Year.
The Daily Telegraph also placed Devil's Bargain – Joshua Green's exposé of Steve Bannon and Donald Trump's relationship — at number 48 on its list. The Financial Times, The Times, and Waterstones loved it too, all naming it one of their Political Books of the Year. The Finanical Times also had Graham Allison's Destined for War on its list, which was also praised by The Sunday Times as ‘thought-provoking and very readable’ in its own Political Books of the Year roundup and namechecked in The National alongside another Scribe title concerning China's relationship with the US, Howard W. French's Everything Under the Heavens.
Lynne Olson's account of an untold part of the WWII story, Last Hope Island, was also praised as a History Book of the Year in The Mail on Sunday. Scott Carney's book about the health benefits of exposure to freezing temperatures, What Doesn't Kill Us, was named one of the Best Books of 2017 by the Evening Standard, and one of the Science Books of the Year by The Times.
And over in Ireland, Danielle Dutton's Margaret the First had a shout-out from the Sunday Independent's Nuala O'Connor, who ‘[adored] this gorgeous novella about the daring, stylish 17th century writer Margaret Cavendish.’ They also named Richard Nixon: the life one of their Best History Reads of 2017, and the Irish Independent had both Devil's Bargain and Jürgen Tampke's A Perfidious Distortion of History on their Best of 2017 list. Kim Mahood's Position Doubtful also garnered praise from journalist Arminta Wallace in The Irish Times's 2017 roundup.
Congratulations to all our authors and thank you to our readers for a fantastic year!
